ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Mara Light

I was born in 1970 in New York. My artistic journey began early in life within the home. Creativity was always encouraged by my parents as they were artist's themselves. I was often drawing and being creative in some form or another.

In my high school years, I started to understand the extraordinary power art would have on my life. Art was a way to escape into my own world, a place where beauty and deep emotions had a voice.

After high school, I completed my BFA in 1993 at the Art Center College of Design in California.

The central theme of my paintings is the expression of the figure with a focus on the female form using light to reveal the mood or expression I would like to convey. I am constantly evolving and dedicated to creating paintings that remain fresh and speak to the viewer on many levels.

Description:

My current series of paintings is called “Beneath the Surface.” The subjects of my paintings, and all people, including nature itself, have many layers. We have our dark sides, and light, parts of ourselves that we show, and others we hide within. Together, this combination creates the beauty of who we are. My hope is that the viewer sees and interprets the paintings, or parts of the paintings, in a different way, each time it is experienced. This is how I believe we view people, nature, and life, always seeing and realizing new things, each time we look, as well as always being impacted by what came before.

Each painting is hand painted with oil on canvas using traditional methods. Often I use abstract collage elements, with materials such as silk or gold leaf in between the many layers of paint.
